Municipal Elections in Finland

Facts about the elections

Municipal elections are held to elect the councillors of the municipalities. The representatives for the municipal councils in 295 municipalities in continental Finland will be elected at the 2017 elections. The number of seats in the municipal councils vary locally between 13 to 85 seats. There are 33 618 candidates in the municipal election, of which 8 999 will be elected.

The April 2017 elections will be held in continental Finland only as the electoral cycle in the province of Åland is different. There are 16 municipalities in the Province of Åland. In Åland municipal elections are also held every fourth year, but not at the same time as in the rest of Finland; the next will be held in 2019.

By voting in municipal elections you can influence the decisions on issues that affect your daily life such as health care, youth facilities, child day care, libraries, school meals, local traffic and elderly care.

Who can vote in municipal elections?

  • Finnish citizens or citizens of another Member State of the European Union as well as of Iceland and Norway who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence is the municipality in question on the 51st day before election day.

  • Foreigners who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence, is the municipality in question on the 51st day before election day, and who at that time have had a municipality of residence in Finland for an uninterrupted period of two years.
