Municipal Elections in Finland

Municipal elections are held every fourth year. The next election will be held on 9 April 2017. Advance voting is in Finland from 29 March to 4 April 2017 and abroad from 29 March to 1 April 2017.

Municipal elections are held to elect the councillors of the municipalities. At the beginning of 2016 there were altogether 297 municipalities in continental Finland and 16 in the Province of Åland. The April 2017 elections will be held in continental Finland only as the electoral cycle in the province of Åland is different. In Åland municipal elections are also held every fourth year, but not at the same time as in the rest of Finland; the next will be held in 2019.

By voting in municipal elections you can influence the decisions on issues that affect your daily life such as health care, youth facilities, child day care, libraries, school meals, local traffic and elderly care.

Who can vote in municipal elections?
